Xiaomi Mi5s: the big bet for the Mi family

For some years now we have seen how one of the companies, leader of the Chinese market, expanded and arrived at our country with enough force. Xiaomi, the great Chinese promise, has managed to beat recordings ever since their arrival. Its capacity for development and its commitment to new technologies have made thousands of users adore you.

In February, the company introduced its flagship of 2016, for which it received, a priori, very little support, as the technology it carried and the final result it offered in the following weeks were not what the community expected. For this reason, as a new strategy and with eagerness to fix the situation, the company decided to give the Xiaomi Mi5 an improved partner.

Well, as we mentioned a week ago, after the technological "disappointment" of the Xiaomi Mi5, the company decided to renew the model and release an "S" version. This version came to our hands almost two weeks ago and after leaving the first impressions, we put a stop to the review in depth the Xiaomi Mi5s. In this way, today we bring you the experience of using and analyzing the perfect renewal of the Xiaomi Mi5.

Specifications: power with the new Qualcomm Snapdragon Before we start, we will explain the complete technical specifications of this device. As we can see, Xiaomi has tried to amend the late arrival of Xiaomi Mi5 with a renewal of technologies of the most interesting:
5.15 inch screen with FullHD definition and 2.5D crystal
Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 to 2.35 GHz 4-core processor Graphics Processor Adreno 530
3 or 4 GB of RAM
64 or 128 GB internal storage
12-megapixel rear camera (SONY IMX378) and 4-megapixel front camera
 3,100 mAh battery
Ultrasonic fingerprint sensor USB Type-C
MIUI 8 (Android 6.0 Marshmallow)
Screen: no change in view

In this field we find curiously the same specifications and so to speak the same final result of the screen with respect to the Xiaomi Mi5, although the company gave much importance to it. With respect to the sensations that it offers, the quality is more than palpable in environments both day and night, emphasizing more in environments with much light and in maintaining a minimum brightness a little past threaded at night.

Specifically, we find that the panel of 5.15 inches FullHD, thanks to a good size, offers a very good pixel density and thanks to the amount of nits it is able to achieve - specifically 600-, the experience is Of the best in this range of inches. In addition, with the glass manufactured in 2.5D we have an effect on the view even more rewarding.
As a negative point, we find something recurrent in the panels of the company, although with the new Mi Mix, this has disappeared. The black frames around the screen of this smartphone are anything but pretty, accentuating itself in the blank version. In short, a panel without surprises but not at all daunting.

Camera: new technology and better sensor It is very common to think that having fewer megapixels means having a camera with less quality. The reality is that on most occasions, the new less megapixel sensors, such as the Samsung Galaxy S7, offer a jump in quality compared to previous ones that only sought to exhibit a greater range of megapixels and, finally In the meantime, the megapixels cause the zoom range in a photo to be greater, but in most of the photographs, the change is almost unrecognizable, when, on the contrary, at a glance you can see the image quality with A good few megapixel sensor and a normal sensor with many megapixels.

After this parrafada, we have to say that this smartphone stars in one of these cases. The Xiaomi Mi5s has a 12 megapixel CMOS sensor manufactured by Sony and a priori, the comparison with the 16 megapixel sensor of the Xiaomi Mi5, would put it in second place, but it is not. The camera of this smartphone has undergone an improvement in technology and in the papers would have to offer a better result.

Finally we get to work and shoot photos here and there, with more light and less light, and the result is this: the Xiaomi Mi5s camera is potentially a very good camera, which is already capable of taking a photos of Very good quality that leave a good taste, but remembering the first moments of the camera of the Xiaomi Mi5, we believe that this camera still has enough room for improvement - especially in dark environments - and only Xiaomi is able to do so. As an example of what the Xiaomi Mi5s can do, we leave you an album full of photos-click on the photo to see them in high quality .

Design: from crystal to metal for a more premium result

Without a doubt, the company did an incredible job in the design of the Xiaomi Mi5, but put to create a renewal of the model, Xiaomi has included a new design in the Xiaomi Mi5s that according to our point of view is much better achieved.

Starting with the rear panel, we have the same curved panel of the Xiaomi Mi5 but made of metal and with antenna bands, iPhone style, up and down. In addition, taking advantage of the change of sensor, and therefore its size, Xiaomi has changed order the LED flash and the camera. Due to the manufacturing method, it must be said that this back panel causes more vertigo in the hand than the Xiaomi Mi5 caused by the panel made of glass.

On the sides we have some buttons on the right side, slightly in line with the final quality of the smartphone as it seems that the construction is not completely well done and are not fixed, moving when you rub your finger over . Also, in The bottom side we find the USB input type C and the speaker slot left and right. The 3.5mm jack would find it on the upper side.

With regard to the front panel, we have exactly the same distribution at the top and a small change at the bottom due to the brand's new ultrasonic sensor. Otherwise, we have a design that is actually more beautiful than the Xiaomi Mi5 and that in the long run is much more cost-effective thanks to its anti-scratch protection on the rear panel, although in this model we have noticed that the crystal that has in The front panel is quite sensitive to scratches.

Redmi Note 4 review is it better ?

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 has big shoes to fill - its predecessor became India's best selling phone online and enjoys great popularity in China. It comes barely half a year since the Note 3 went on sale, but it's not quite a direct replacement - instead both will live side by side, with the Note 4 being a more premium offering.

The Redmi Note 4 commands a slightly higher price, but a couple of things elevate it from the mid-range status of the Redmi series. First, Xiaomi builds each of these full metal bodies out of an aluminum ingot, something Sony and HTC do for their flagships. And second, not long ago, the Helio X20 chipset was often used to blur the mid-range/high-end line.
As a bonus, the "expensive" High edition comes with generous 64GB of storage. The quotes are because even the top model is below the €200 price point.

Key Features

  • Aluminum unibody design
  • 5.5" IPS display of 1080p resolution; 401ppi
  • MediaTek MT6797 Helio X20 chipset; 2x Cortex-A72 + 4x Cortex-A53 + 4x Cortex-A53; Mali-T880 MP4 at 700MHz
  • Android 6.0 Marshmallow with MIUI 8 (Global 8.0.7.0)
  • Standard edition: 2GB RAM with 16GB of storage; High edition: 3GB RAM with 64GB storage; microSD support, hybrid slot shared with 2nd SIM
  • 13 megapixel rear camera, f/2.0 aperture, PDAF, dual-LED dual-tone flash; 1080p @ 30fps video, 720p @ 120fps
  • 5 megapixel front camera, f/2.0 aperture; 720p @ 30fps video
  • Dual SIM, LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.2, IR, microUSB
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • 4,100mAh battery

Main shortcomings

  • Runs heavily skinned Marshmallow
  • Non-removable battery
  • Cannot have 2 SIMs and a microSD card
  • No Quick charge 2.0/3.0 support, just 5V/2A charging
